The Ocean Lidar STUDY (OLiS) is a collaborative affort of the Laboratoire d’Océanologie et de Géosciences" (LOG) a French national research institution affiliated with the Université du Littoral-Côte d'Opale, the Université Lille1 and the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), the National Research Council of Italy (CNR), University of Warsaw in Poland (UW), Università della Basilicata in Itlay (UNIBAS), and University of Bremen (UB)

OLIS aims at exploring the potential development of a new space mission using lidar technology to monitor the ocean color. OLIS objective is to critically review the state-of-the-art for satellite LIDAR measurements, technologies and systems and identify user needs for surface and sub-surface ocean applications in the context of European policies. We will identify and elaborate preliminary mission requirements to address user needs for a satellite LIDAR system for ocean surface and sub-surface observable parameters and derived geophysical parameters including total standard uncertainty estimates. Then we will develop, implement, test and apply a scientific simulation tool that will be used to explore, and verify preliminary mission requirements for the aforementioned parameters, including total standard uncertainty estimates. As a next step a review and assessment of European technology options that could potentially support the development of a European ocean satellite LIDAR instrument. Then, we will be able to define a potential future satellite mission and system in an Ocean LIDAR Mission Definition Document and, finally, we will propose a roadmap of scientific and technical activities that are required to achieve SRL-4 and TRL-4 for a potential Ocean LIDAR Mission.
