The investigations aimed at fabrication of artificial corneal implants were initiated over 200 years ago. Although several constructions have been developed and clinically tested, very few have had successful long-term results and became used in regular clinical. This paper presents a review of those successful devices with emphasis on their indications, surgical techniques and results. Emerging devices and innovative approaches for the future are also mentioned.
