Marine low-level clouds in the extra tropics and polar regions are often mixed-phase clouds (MPCs) that contain not only water, but also cloud ice. Our understanding of the physics of these clouds remains incomplete and the impact of ice formation and growth on the overall cloud-radiative effect in these regions, and thus their impact on climate sensitivity, unclear. In this seminar I will discuss remaining key uncertainties in MPC physics and how they may, or may not, impact cloud-radiative properties of a given mixed-phase cloud deck.
