POLIMOS Campaign: Zabrze SMOG 2022

The RS-Lab research team led by Iwona Stachlewska from the Institute of Geophysics, Faculty of Physics, University of Warsaw is on a measurement campaign in Zabrze from 2-24 December 2021, with the task of measuring smog, as part of one of the POLIMOS campaigns funded by the European Space Agency (ESA-ESTEC).

For this purpose, the mobile Lidar EMORAL has been installed at the measuring station of the Institute of Environmental Engineering of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Zabrze, managed by Krzysztof Klejnowski from the Institute of Environmental Engineering of the Polish Academy of Sciences (ipis.pan.pl). 

The campaign is coordinated on behalf of the UW by Łucja Janicka, with the participation of Iwona Stachlewska and volunteers Rafał Fortuna and Patryk Poczta. The work of the IPIŚ-PAN Team is coordinated by Krzysztof Klejnowski, with support from Marianna Czaplicka, Katarzyna Jaworek and Barbara Błaszczak.

Preliminary analyses of lidar measurements showed significant differences in the vertical structure of smog in Zabrze, compared to smog measured during winter in Cracow, Warsaw or Wrocław.

Such measurements were made with the EMORAL lidar during the POLIMOS Krakow-SMOG Campaign 2018 and 2022, carried out in collaboration with Jarosław Nęcki and Mirosław Zimnoth from the AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow (agh.edu.pl). As well as during the POLIMOS Wrocław-SMOG 2022 Campaign, realised in cooperation with Anetta Drzeniecka-Osiadacz from Wrocław University (uni.wroc.pl).

In turn, smog in Warsaw is observed with PollyXT and NARLa lidars during regular measurements at the IGF FUW RS-Lab station within the distributed European Research Infrastructure ACTRIS (actris.net).
