Next Generation Earth System Models

Advances in computing are opening a new frontier in Earth System Modelling. Coupled storm-resolving (km-scale) Earth-System Models (SR-ESMs) represent essential aspects of the climate physics, such as transport and mixing by ocean eddies, vertical mixing by deep convection, and the interaction of the mean flow with important topographic and bathymetric features explicitly, using known laws of physics. SR-ESMs are redefining the agenda of climate science, increasing emphasis on understanding the subset of remaining processes that models must continue to parameterize — such as small scale mixing or cloud mirophysical processes — and on the challenge of transforming the state space of these models into information that is useful for more than simply advancing this state space one time-step into the future.
