Flying a new drone in Mokotow Field under foggy conditions 01.11.2022, Radiation Transfer Laboratory

On November 1, 2022, a team of researchers from the Radiation Transfer Laboratory, taking advantage of unusually favorable atmospheric conditions for measurements, tested the operation of the new drone in foggy conditions in Mokotow Field in Warsaw. Instrumentation was connected to the drone to measure short- and long-wave radiation, black carbon particles as well as the number of smog particles in the air (PM10, PM2.5, PM1).  During the flights, the possibility of precise positioning of the drone in conditions of limited visibility was also tested thanks to the RTK function, i.e. Real-Time Kinematic. This modern technology allows measurements with an accuracy of up to 1 cm of horizontal error in ideal conditions. It is increasingly used in industry, science, and for commercial purposes. The drone was all covered with water after landing, but no malfunctions or damage to the equipment were found. Participating in the measurements were: Katarzyna Nurowska, Szymon Acedański, and Michał Chiliński, under the direction of dr hab. Krzysztof Markowicz, prof.ucz.

Within the framework of the project "Impact of aerosol on microphysical, optical and radiation properties of fog" the physical processes involved in the development and disappearance of fog are studied, in particular the processes of hygroscopic aerosol growth and droplet evaporation processes associated with the heating of air by absorbing aerosols, as well as radiation processes occurring from the ground surface to the upper boundary of the fog. For this purpose, a modern research methodology based on an unmanned flying platform is used. A horizontally stabilized platform is used to mount a pyranometer and pyrgeometer on the drone. This makes it possible to obtain data on the radiation balance in the smog layer, which is crucial in terms of physical processes such as condensation and evaporation of water droplets. Experimental research is carried out in continuous mode and during field experiments in the Warsaw metropolitan area and at the SolarAOT radiation transfer station in Strzyżów, Subcarpathia.
