Autism spectrum disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterised primarily by impaired social interaction and communication, repetitive and stereotyped patterns of behaviour, interests or activities. However, visual impairments and visual processing disorders are also an important feature of the condition and can therefore be used as an additional diagnostic criterion. The present study shows that convergence insufficiency and abnormal eye movements, as well as impaired eye-hand coordination, are more common in children with autism spectrum disorders, suggesting that ophthalmological and optometric consultation is essential both during and after diagnosis of ASD.
