ISSI Forum: “Network of oceanic lidars for the validation of Ocean Color satellite missions”, 20–22 May 2025

On 20–22 May 2025, the International Space Science Institute (ISSI) in Bern, Switzerland, will host an international scientific Forum entitled “Network of Oceanic LIDARs for the Validation of Ocean Color Satellite Missions.”

The objective of this Forum is to gather attendees from diverse scientific and technological fields to discuss the opportunity to develop a network of in-situ observations using the lidar technique. Those observations will be used to validate current and futures ocean color space missions but also the next generation based on lidar such as the LUCE space mission currently developed by the Italian Space Agency in coordination with NASA. To ensure reliable validation of data from such missions, it is necessary to develop a dedicated measurement infrastructure and a unified methodological framework.

The Forum's programme includes presentations by experts representing institutions such as NASA, ESA, ACTRIS/EARLINET, and AERONET-OC. Participants will discuss instrumental requirements, data processing algorithms, the location and frequency of measurements, and the integration of the future network with existing validation systems. As part of the session on lidar measurement networks, a case study of an operational monitoring station will be presented Professor Iwona Stachlewska, Director of the Institute of Geophysics, Faculty of Physics, University of Warsaw.
